Wondering where is hot in June? Europe is the answer this month: early summer brings 27°C to 31°C heat to the eastern Mediterranean, and the days are the longest of the year, so you get more sunshine hours in June than in baking August. Athens, Cyprus and Antalya lead for outright heat; the islands are a few degrees gentler and far less crowded than they will be in six weeks.
June is also the sweet spot for price: schools are still in, so resorts that double their rates in August are quiet and reasonable. The only caveat is the sea, which lags the air temperature and is still warming up. Here is where we would go, with typical June daytime highs and sea temperatures.
ANTALYA, TURKEY
Antalya is already in full summer by June: highs around 31°C, thirteen hours of sunshine a day and a sea that has warmed to 24°C. Rain has all but stopped by the first week. Resort prices are noticeably kinder than July, which makes this the month regulars book.
CYPRUS
Cyprus in June means 31°C in Paphos, dry skies and a 24°C sea. It is hot enough for full beach days without August’s fierceness, and cool enough at the edges of the day to actually see Kourion or the Troodos villages without melting.
ATHENS AND THE GREEK ISLANDS
Athens hits 30°C in June, and this is the last comfortable month for the Acropolis before high summer. The islands run a couple of degrees cooler: Rhodes and Crete around 28°C with a 23°C sea, Santorini and Mykonos at 27°C. Ferries are running full schedules but the queues have not arrived yet.
MAJORCA, SPAIN
Majorca in June is 27°C to 28°C, dry, and blissfully pre-crowds: the same beaches that heave in August are merely busy. The sea is 23°C and rising through the month. Late June is warmer than early June by a couple of degrees if you can pick your week.
MALTA
Malta reaches 28°C in June with practically guaranteed sunshine and a 22°C sea. The evenings are warm without being sticky, which suits Valletta’s outdoor restaurants perfectly. St Peter’s Pool and the Blue Lagoon on Comino are far more pleasant now than in peak season.
COSTA DEL SOL AND SEVILLE, SPAIN
The Costa del Sol sits at 27°C to 29°C in June with an 21°C sea. Inland is another story: Seville and Córdoba are already pushing 33°C, glorious for late evenings on the plazas, punishing for midday sightseeing. Coast for comfort, cities for heat.
ALGARVE, PORTUGAL
The Algarve in June is 26°C, dry and fresh-aired, with the Atlantic at a wake-you-up 19°C. It is prime month for the coast path around Lagos and Sagres: hot enough for the beach, cool enough to walk the cliffs at noon.
SICILY, ITALY
Sicily runs at 28°C on the June coast with a 22°C sea. Taormina, Syracuse and the Aeolian Islands are all at their best: summer weather, spring greenery still on the hills, and none of the August scramble for sunbeds and restaurant tables.
TENERIFE AND THE CANARIES, SPAIN
The Canaries offer their usual dependable warmth in June: 26°C to 27°C, sunny in the southern resorts, with the Atlantic at 21°C. If you want guaranteed warmth without Mediterranean heat spikes, Tenerife’s south coast remains the steady option.
FURTHER AFIELD IN JUNE
June opens several dry seasons: Bali (29°C) and Zanzibar (29°C) are both excellent, and Kenya’s coast pairs 28°C heat with the start of safari high season. Skip the Caribbean (hurricane season has begun), most of south-east Asia (monsoon) and the Gulf, where Dubai is already past 38°C.
JUNE AT A GLANCE
Hottest short-haul: Antalya and Cyprus (31°C). Warmest sea: Antalya (24°C). Best value: everywhere, compared with six weeks later. Best all-rounder: Majorca or Rhodes, summer heat before summer prices. Avoid: the Gulf’s extreme heat and monsoon Asia.
